Laura Ashley is one of the world’s best-loved fashion and home furnishings companies in the world. In the early 1950s, enthused by an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Laura and Bernard Ashley set up a homemade printing press on their kitchen table and started to print simple monoprint patterns for neck scarves, tablemats, napkins and tea towels. The products proved to be so popular that within a short space of time they were selling to the biggest retailers in the UK, and the rest is history. Laura Ashley became renowned for its abundance of small-scale prints, particularly for dress fabrics and home textiles. By 1975 the Company had 40 shops in the UK and abroad.

Blueprint Collectables tells the story of Laura Ashley’s first steps. She had always had great interest in different cultures and the arts and could often be found in museums and movie theatres. She was in fact greatly inspired by the movie Roman Holiday, where Audrey Hepburn was seen wearing small printed scarves. ‘We should do that too!’, she must have said to her husband, Bernard. Not too long after that, did she in fact produce the first few handmade prints in two colours, on her very kitchen table, using a machine that had cost her around £10. What a great investment that
turned out to be!
The scarves quickly proved to be a great success. It was those same first handmade prints that gave us the inspiration for our Blueprint Collectables: a beautiful range of blue and white mixed flower designs on refined new bone porcelain that will give your table the real Laura Ashley feeling.
Laura Ashley loved culture, in every way, she drew inspiration for designs from everywhere: museums, exhibitions, her beloved Welsh culture and, every now and then, there were also special events such as auctions. It was indeed at an auction she attended in search for inspiration that she found a beautiful curtain from 1890: it was so old and delicate, almost parchment, yet the design touched her deeply. She bought the beautiful piece and translated it into her own design, with her own colours and the typical Laura Ashley feeling. A new iconic print was born: Summer Palace. This beautiful impressively large print became a classic, and later appeared in several more colours too.
This was the inspiration for our Heritage Collectables: not only because the print is so extraordinary, but also because of the origins, the heritage and the story behind it. Enjoy this new bone porcelain range of Collectables with all the elements from this iconic, timeless print. You can mix and match every piece and give your table that grand iconic Laura Ashley look!
Wales was home for Laura Ashley and one of the places dearest to her heart. She loved the beautiful countryside with its hilly landscapes, the vast spaces, even the drizzly weather, but most of it all she loved the Welsh culture. Culture and nature are where Laura drew inspiration from and soon became an integral part of the stories she wanted to tell through her designs, which still resonate with so many of us to this day. Close your eyes, imagine entering one of those beautiful rural cottages, sitting at the kitchen table with your kind host and enjoying dinner together: what do you see? Sturdy yet elegant pottery pieces with and irregular handmade look and refined details.

It’s no big secret that Laura Ashley loved nature: the real leitmotiv in her legacy, in all variations of flowers and nature designs. In addition to her love for everything that grew and blossomed, her style has also become famous for the use of colour, with some tones frequently coming back in
her colour charts. One of them is sage green: a timeless slightly greyed green, that is very easily connects different shades in her designs.
The use of this colour has become a classic. Besides Sage, Oxblood is also an indispensable part of the Laura Ashley pallet. The beautiful, refined Wild Clematis print from her very early days, now a classic, in combination with the more recent Daniela design produces a very contemporary image. The marriage of both colours with the two designs gave us the inspiration for our Wild Clematis Collectables. The refined classic stripes and dots connect the whole print and give you the chance to create your own timeless tableware combinations with the ultimate Laura Ashley feeling.
